Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
We’re Stina and Bethany--sisters who grew up quilting. The women in our family have passed down the craft for generations, and we both recognize the importance of keeping the tradition going. Quilting brings the family together and gives us a creative outlet. We’re based in the New Hampshire seacoast, where we both grew up, and we teach college English in our spare time.
What will I get from you?
You’ll get a high-quality, personalized, and unique quilt that displays your various achievements or memories. When we receive your tee-shirts we assess which ones will work best (based on the wear of the shirts, the size of the designs, and the variety in the designs/colors). We cut 12” blocks from the shirts, sew together your quilt, and ship it to you with any extra tee-shirts that we don’t use. If you send tee-shirts that you absolutely want included in the quilt, please indicate that by pinning a note to it. Otherwise, we’ll use our best judgment.
What makes you different from other tee-shirt quilters?
Many tee-shirt quilters will provide you with a great finished product, but it won’t necessarily reflect your individuality. We take pride in providing you with a quilt that you will love. That means we have contact with you to make sure you get the colors and patterns that best reflect your personality and style.
What sizes are the quilts?
Your finished 12-square quilt will be roughly 50” x 64”. We say “roughly” because they’re handmade, which means there might be a half-inch difference here and there.
How much do quilts cost?
Our standard 12-square quilt costs $225, which also covers shipping and handling. You can pay with a check--an option for paying with a credit card is coming soon. If you’re interested in a larger quilt, contact us for pricing.
How soon will I get my quilt?
It depends on our project load. We’ll let you know what our turnaround time looks like when you contact us.
How do I get started?
Before you order or purchase anything, send us an email through our Ordering Information page. We’ll get back to you to find out exactly what you want in your quilt. We’ll also let you know what our turnaround time is so that you have an idea of when you can expect your quilt.
What will I need to send you?
Your tee shirts and payment. Send three more shirts than will go in the quilt you order so that we can determine which ones are most usable (based on the wear of the shirts, the size of the designs, and the variety in the designs/colors). For example, if you order a 12-block quilt, send us 15 shirts. We’ll send back the shirts we don’t use in the quilt.
Can I provide my own fabrics?
Absolutely. If you’d like to choose your own fabrics, let us know and we’ll tell you the measurements you need.
How do I care for my quilt? Can I use it?
The quilts are sturdy enough to be hung on the wall, be used to keep warm, be taken to the park for a picnic, etc. They are machine washable on the delicates cycle and dryable on low tumble.
What if one of the seams starts to come apart?
Before we send you your quilt, we double-check all the seams to make sure they’re sturdy. It is very unlikely that normal wear and tear will result in ripped seams. However, if you do notice one, contact us and we can either walk you through a repair or have you ship it to us for upkeep depending on the severity of the problem.
Who can I contact if I have a question?
You’re always welcome to contact us with questions you might have. Email is best as we check it regularly.
What’s up with the name Raw Edge? How did your business start?
Raw Edge is the unfinished (unhemmed or untrimmed) edge of a piece of fabric. We started our business by making quilts for Stina’s sister-in-law’s friends who are members of the LA Tri club (Los Angeles Triathlon). They get tee-shirts for each race in which they participate or volunteer, so our business helps them turn big stacks of shirts into functional memory quilts. Triathletes certainly push themselves to the edge, and we can only imagine that they feel pretty raw at the end of a race. Thus, the name “Raw Edge” seemed to reflect both the process of making quilts and our original customer base.
While triathletes make up a large portion of our customers, we also make quilts for anyone who simply wants to turn tee-shirts that he or she might not be wearing (but can’t part with!) into a memory quilt.
